Media and RTI complement each other : Uday Mahurkar
Information Commissioner of Government of India said in 'Friday Dialogue'
New Delhi, 18th December । "Right To Information and Journalism have adopted each other as a supplement.
In this way, this right and the law made for it is giving important support in the work of journalism, whereas journalism has played a significant role in the creation, establishment and preservation of this law." said Information Commissioner of the Government of India, Shri Uday Mahurkar, in a program called 'Friday Dialogue' organized by the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) on Friday.
On this occasion, the Director General of IIMC Prof. Sanjay Dwivedi and Additional Director General (Training) Smt. Mamta Verma was also present.
Speaking on the subject of 'Media and The Right to Information', Sh. Mahurkar said that bringing transparency in the process of government is the main objective of Right to Information and much success has been achieved in this direction. He said that if journalists use it properly, then much important information can reach the public through it. Many journalists in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh have published information prominently under the Right to Information Act.
Shri Mahurkar said that the right to access of information empowers the poor and weaker sections of society to seek and obtain information about public policies and actions so that their welfare is possible. He said that the government and civic institutions should work together to strengthen the RTI Act.
On this occasion, Prof. Sanjay Dwivedi said that RTI should be used in the public interest by journalists and common citizens, only then the right to information will be meaningful as a public right.
The program was conducted by Prof. Shashwati Goswami and the welcome speech was given by Prof. Pramod Kumar. IIMC has started a program called 'Friday Dialogue' to make the students communicate with the eminent scholars of the country.
