Who is Ashraf Ali Bastavi ?

Ashraf Ali Bastavi is a New Delhi based Indian journalist. He is currently Chief Editor of the News Portal www.asiatimes.co.in, which focuses on Asian affairs.

He is also the founder of the All India Ideal Journalist Association (AIIJA), an organisation dedicated to the promotion of Value-Based Journalism. He is a regular commentator on problems concerning Indian Muslims and Indian politics. His career as a journalist spanned a decade.

He also works as a casual Urdu news reader for India's Public Broadcasting House All India Radio –NSD and as a casual News Editor for DD News Channel.

He also works as a PTC in New Delhi for the Urdu Times, North America's largest Urdu news publication (www.urdutimes.com). His articles have been published in different newspapers and news websites.

Early childhood development and education

Bastavi was born on March 22, 1978, into an agricultural family in District Basti, Uttar Pradesh, India. Graduated from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University (DDU) in Uttar Pradesh with a bachelor's degree in English, Urdu, and Political Science. MA in Urdu from Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) New Delhi and Mass Media from Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) New Delhi.

He was the first college graduate in his family and community after graduating from Ambika Pratap Narayan (APN) PG College in Basti in 1999.

Career in early stages

He joined The Daily Urdu Times Mumbai www.urdutimes.net as a Stringer for Eastern UP shortly after graduating in 1999. After gaining some experience, he was hired as a reporter for the newly launched Roznama Sahara Urdu Gorakhpur Edition on September 13, 2002, and was then promoted to Area Reporter from Bagh Nagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. He eventually joined Hindi Daily Dainik Jagran www.jagran.com in 2004 and after two years with the Jagran group, he moved to Delhi in 2006 in pursuit of a suitable job. He began his career as a reporter for the Hindustan Express Daily, a newly launched Urdu newspaper.

He has conducted at least 500 exclusive interviews for DAWAT's bi-weekly "JAIZA" special feature on more than 70 national, international, and community-related issues.
